What is a Sacrificial Rod for?

The sacrificial rod, also called an anode, is the rod installed inside the tank that helps prevent rust. Although most steel water tanks are protected with glass lining, imperfections could still cause water to get into the steel component and cause rust to develop.

This is when the sacrificial rod becomes useful. It is made of zinc, magnesium, or aluminum, which rusts faster than steel. The rod protects the steel tank by taking its place.

Sacrificial Rod Replacement

You cannot tell immediately when it’s time for replacement because the anode is inside the water tank. Anode rods have a lifespan of four to five years. But since each case is different, the best way to find out is to see for yourself.

You can do this by unscrewing it from the cover of the water tank using a wrench. If it needs replacement, then simply slide in a new anode and tighten using a wrench. Remember that you must turn off both the water supply and the water heater when you check and replace.

Anode replacement should be included in water heater maintenance to avoid rust. Rust is one of the main reasons that cause serious water heater problems. Replacing the anode regularly will avoid unnecessary expenses brought by repairs and water heater replacement.
